Toluene Metabolite Profile
Test ID:
703991
CPT code:
82570, 84600
Clinical Use:
Monitor toluene exposure
Test Information:
o-Cresol poisoning via acute or chronic exposure is manifested by headache, dizziness, vomiting, rapid respiration, dyspnea, weakness, and damage to the lung, liver, and kidneys. o-Cresol, one of the three isomers of cresol (m- and p-cresol are the other two isomers), is introduced into the body from cresol exposure. Cresols are employed as disinfectants and as chemical intermediates in the production of plasticizers and resins. o-Cresol is also a metabolite of toluene, accounting for a small percentage of the absorbed toluene dose.
Specimen Type:
Urine (random)
Requested Volume:
15 mL
Minimum Volume:
6.2 mL
Container Type:
Plastic urine container, no preservative
Collection:
Sampling time is end of shift for industrial exposure monitoring. Metabolites with timing “end of shift” (meaning the last two hours of exposure) are eliminated rapidly with a half-life less than five hours. Such metabolites do not accumulate in the body and, therefore, their timing is critical only in relation to the exposure period.
Expected Turnaround Time:
1 to 2 Days
Storage Instructions:
Maintain specimen at room temperature.
