Styrene Metabolite Profile

Test ID:

703967

CPT code:

82570, 83921

Synonyms:

Styrene Metabolite Profile, Urine

Clinical Use:

Monitor industrial exposure to styrene

Test Information:

Mandelic acid in urine represents approximately 85% of the styrene dose. Urine mandelic acid levels indicate the extent of chronic ethyl benzene and styrene exposures, which are typically associated with industry. Refer to ethyl benzene and styrene tests for additional information.
BEI® are reference values intended as guidelines for evaluation of occupational exposure. BEI® represent biological levels of chemicals that correspond to workers with inhalation exposure equivalent to the threshold limit value (TLV) of the chemicals. TLVs refer to the airborne concentrations of substances and represent conditions under which it is believed that nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed, day after day, without adverse health effects

Specimen Type:

Urine

Requested Volume:

5 mL

Minimum Volume:

2.2 mL

Container Type:

Plastic urine container, no preservative

Collection:

Sampling time is end of shift or prior to next shift. Metabolites with timing “end of shift” (meaning the last two hours of exposure) or “prior to next shift” are eliminated rapidly with a half-life less than five hours. Such metabolites do not accumulate in the body and, therefore, their timing is critical only in relation to the exposure and postexposure periods.

Storage Instructions:

Maintain specimen at room temperature.
