Clinical Use:

The specific gravity of urine is used to obtain information about the state of the kidney and the state of hydration of the patient.

Specimen Type:


Requested Volume: 

10 mL

Minimum Volume: 

1 mL

Container Type: 

Urinalysis transport tube (yellow-top, blue fill line, preservative tube)


Encourage mid-stream samples to minimize contamination and improve accuracy.
Label the sample appropriately and store at room temperature until pick-up.

Storage Instructions:

Maintain specimen at room temperature. If arrival extends beyond seven days, then refrigerate.

Stability Requirements:

Room temperature: 72 hours
Refrigerated: 72 hours
Frozen: Unacceptable

Unpreserved specimen
