Determine the presence of Pneumocystis carinii
Specimen Type:
Induced sputum, bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL), lung tissue, bronchial brush, tracheal aspirates, transtracheal aspirates, body fluids.
Requested Volume:
5 to 10 mL induced sputum, 10 to 25 mL BAL, 0.5 to 1 cc tissue or biopsy fluid
Container Type:
Sterile leakproof specimen container.
Collection:
Sputum specimens are not recommended.
Storage Instructions:
Refrigerate at 2°C to 8°C.
Rejection Criteria:
Swab specimen; specimen received in grossly leaking transport container; specimen submitted in fixative or additive; inappropriate specimen transport conditions; specimen received after prolonged delay in transport (usually more than 72 hours); specimen stored or transported at room temperature; unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label.
