Benzene Metabolite Profile
Test ID:
703540
CPT code:
82570; 84600
Clinical Use:
Monitor exposure to benzene
Test Information:
Phenol is the primary metabolite of benzene. Phenol comprises approximately 51% to 87% of an absorbed dose of benzene. The hematopoietic system is the chief target for benzene’s toxic effects, which are manifested by alterations in the levels of formed elements in the peripheral blood. These effects have occurred at concentrations of benzene that may not cause irritation of mucous membranes, or any unpleasant sensory effects.
Specimen Type:
Urine (random)
Requested Volume:
15 mL
Minimum Volume:
5.2 mL
Container Type:
Plastic urine container, no preservative
Collection:
Sampling time is end of shift for industrial exposure monitoring. Metabolites with timing “end of shift” (meaning the last two hours of exposure) are eliminated rapidly with a half-life less than five hours. Such metabolites do not accumulate in the body and, therefore, their timing is critical only in relation to the exposure period.
Storage Instructions:
Maintain specimen at room temperature.
