Specimen Type:

Serum, plasma, and whole blood

Requested Volume: 

6 mL (2 mL in each of three tubes) platelet-poor citrated plasma, frozen, 5 mL whole blood, and 2 mL serum, frozen

Container Type: 

Gel-barrier tube or red-top tube, lavender-top (EDTA) tube, or yellow-top (ACD) tube, and blue-top (sodium citrate) tube

Collection:

Plasma must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture and must be centrifuged a second time before being placed in plastic transport tubes. Freeze within two hours and keep frozen until testing is performed. Allow red-top tube to clot. Centrifuge and remove serum from cells within one hour. Send serum in plastic transport tube. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.

Storage Instructions:

Freeze serum and plasma. Maintain whole blood at room temperature; stable for seven days.

Rejection Criteria

Noncitrated plasma; gross hemolysis; fibrin clot; clotted samples if adequate DNA not obtained
